World's First Water and Dust Resistant Blackberry Smartphone Goes on-sale in Canada Starting November 10

TORONTO – October 31, 2017 – TCL Communication has officially unveiled their newest BlackBerry smartphone with the launch of the BlackBerry Motion, an all-touch Android smartphone, designed to empower the most challenging, on-the-go lifestyle. Coming to Canada with Bell, TELUS, Koodo and SaskTel, this all-new BlackBerry smartphone continues the heritage of offering customers the best in reliability, productivity, privacy and security. BlackBerry Motion is also the first BlackBerry smartphone to offer IP67 water and dust resistance, a new anti-scratch display technology, and the largest battery ever in a BlackBerry.

BlackBerry Motion will be available starting November 10 online at Koodo and in select Bell, TELUS and SaskTel stores starting at $99 CAD on a two year term.¹

"Working with our partners in Canada to launch our newest BlackBerry smartphone gives us the opportunity to bring our expanded portfolio to this important market, delivering new experiences while remaining steadfast with legendary privacy, reliability and productivity that have made BlackBerry so iconic over the years," said Steve Cistulli, President and General Manager for TCL Communication, North America. "The BlackBerry Motion is an exciting addition to our growing BlackBerry smartphone portfolio in North America, and it sets a strong foundation for additional portfolio growth in this region in the years to come."

"Once again TCL Communication has delivered on their promise, to produce a true BlackBerry device that will meet and exceed expectations," said Alex Thurber, SVP and GM of Mobility Solutions, BlackBerry. "We’re confident that customers, who are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of security and productivity on their smartphones, are going to enjoy the new BlackBerry Motion."

MADE FOR REAL LIFE

A new first for BlackBerry smartphones, the IP67 water and dust resistant rating is combined with the new 5.5-inch Full-HD Premium Anti-Scratch Display, creating the sleek, purposeful-designed BlackBerry Motion that features a hardened aluminum frame and soft-grip textured back to provide greater durability and protection for real life everyday use.

BlackBerry Motion also comes with the largest battery ever in a BlackBerry smartphone (4,000mAh), offering 32+ hours of mixed use. When in need of a charge, Qualcomm® Quick Charge™ 3.0 enables up to a 50 percent charge in roughly 40 minutes using a USB Type-C charger. Powered by Android™ 7.1 Nougat, this all-new BlackBerry smartphone gives customers access to the entire Google Pla™ store and will receive monthly Android security updates for a minimum of two years. It will be upgraded to Android Oreo in the new year.

MADE FOR SECURITY & PRIVACY

Like the BlackBerry KEYone, the BlackBerry Motion is designed with security and privacy built-in right from the start. This includes a hardened operating system and BlackBerry Limited’s proprietary technique for establishing a hardware root of trust and adding security keys to the processor. The BlackBerry Motion also comes with signature BlackBerry experiences that bring an unmatched level of efficiency to everything a customer does on the phone, such as BlackBerry® Hub, BlackBerry® Calendar, DTEK™ by BlackBerry and BlackBerry® Boost charging.

New to this latest BlackBerry Smartphone is a personal Locker. With Locker, customers can store documents and photos to an internal storage area that requires the device owner’s PIN code or fingerprint to access. Locker Mode allows customers to capture images and directly save those photos to the internal storage area, so they are not automatically saved to a cloud.

MADE FOR CONVENIENCE

Customers can also experience an enhanced Convenience Key, fully customizable, and brings even greater functionality and context to the quick-access physical key – unique to BlackBerry smartphones. This feature now includes four customizable profiles for Home, Car, Office and User, allowing three different shortcut options that can be triggered by a home WiFi network, in-car Bluetooth, meetings that are synced to BlackBerry Hub or the most commonly used apps. There is also a fingerprint sensor on the front of the device, which doubles as a physical home button for added ease of use.

This brand pillar approach focuses on multiple facets of the company’s product portfolio: the entry-consumer, best-in-class enterprise, connected (IoT) and emerging segments – all leveraging the success of the TCL Communication manufacturing, R&D and operations along with the legacy of some of the industry’s most iconic brands, including Alcatel and BlackBerry.

"Our industry is in the midst of an evolution, where consumers are now demanding greater functionality and value from their mobile devices than ever before," said Steve Cistulli, President and General Manager for TCL Communication (TCT), North America. "To meet these growing demands, both carriers and retailers need a more diverse product offering, requiring portfolio efficiencies that were previously unavailable from a single manufacturer – until now. We’re boldy evolving our business, offering end-to-end efficiencies from sales, through R&D, manufacturing and logistics. This business evolution will provide greater value to our customers in the premium post-paid and affordable no-contract tiers."

Offering carriers and retailers exceptional quality and value, backed by TCL’s world-class R&D and manufacturing capabilities, the TCL Communication portfolio will be anchored by the Alcatel and BlackBerry handset brands while continuing to evolve in 2017. This will include additional mobility offerings to be announced in the first half of the year that will allow the company to further address consumer demands. Among the first products in this portfolio is the latest BlackBerry smartphone, focused on three core features: security, productivity and reliability. Previewed at CES, the smartphone draws on unparalleled mobile security and software expertise to offer the most complete end-to-end smartphone security available on Android.

"We look forward to unveiling details around this distinctly different and impressively designed BlackBerry smartphone around the Mobile World Congress timeframe next month," continued Cistulli.
